Here at Walt’s we offer two style’s of PVC coated wire mesh, GAW and GBW.

🛡️ The Double Protection System

You are essentially getting two premium protective layers, one over the other, to create a virtually weatherproof barrier.

1. The Core: G.A.W. (Galvanized After Weld)

First, the wire mesh is constructed using the Galvanized After Weld (GAW) process. This is the critical foundation.

• How it Works: The steel wire is welded into the mesh grid first. Then, the entire finished mesh is submerged in a bath of molten zinc.

• The Benefit: This hot-dip process ensures that a thick zinc coating completely seals and protects every single part of the mesh, especially the most vulnerable spot: the weld points.

2. The Exterior: Marine-Grade PVC Coating 

The GAW mesh is then covered with a durable, thick layer of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which is heat-fused (or “bonded”) to the galvanized wire underneath.

• How it Works: The PVC coating is a tough, UV-stabilized plastic layer that creates an impervious seal over the zinc layer.

• The Benefit: This is your second line of defense. It prevents moisture, air, salt, and chemicals from even reaching the zinc layer, doubling the mesh’s resistance to corrosion and significantly extending its life.

• Aesthetics and Safety: The PVC coating is typically available in colors like black, green, yellow, blue, white, and red, allowing the mesh to blend seamlessly into the landscape. It also provides a smooth finish, eliminating sharp edges, which makes it much safer for use around pets, children, and in high-traffic areas.

⚙️ The Two Layers of GBW PVC Mesh

This product is created with two protective layers, but the order of the first two steps is the reason for its shorter lifespan:

1. The Core: G.B.W. (Galvanized Before Weld)

This is the initial protection on the wire strand itself.

• Process: The raw steel wire is coated with a thin layer of zinc (galvanized). Then, these pre-coated wires are electrically welded together to form the mesh pattern.

• The Flaw: The intense heat of the welding process literally burns off and destroys the zinc coating at the critical intersection of the wires. This leaves a small, bare spot of steel at every single weld joint.

• Vulnerability: This exposed steel is the starting point for rust.

2. The Exterior: PVC Coating

After the mesh is welded, a thick, colored PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) plastic coating is applied over the entire surface.

• The Benefit: The PVC provides an excellent barrier against external elements like rain, salt, and UV rays. It also gives the mesh a great look (typically green or black) and a smooth, safe finish.
